Ultra-Thin Stainless-Steel Foil Cut-to-Length Blades
Nippon Steel Chemical & Material describes flexible ultrathin stainless foil with precision rolling and electronic applications. Ulbrich supplies finished-gauge stainless foil as coil stock; All Foils documents metal-foil sheeting, including stainless steel. These sources support transverse conversion of a named foil coil into flat lengths. The product here is a simple rectangular sheet or feed blank, not a complex stamped spring. Ultra-thin stainless can retain coil set or mark under pickup tools, so a cut length is only useful if the piece remains flat and clean during transfer. Grade, temper, surface finish and receiving operation must come from the buyer’s drawing; no universal tolerance follows from the word “precision.”

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Specify a receiving blank, not just a line length
Identify whether the sheet feeds an electronic spring die, shielding laminate or board-reinforcement operation. Draw both length and usable width with rolling-direction arrows and permitted edge orientation. Include gripping or later-trim allowances where the next station requires them.
Hold the web during the transverse stroke
Use a flat support and registered feed so the shear does not pull a wrinkle into a thin foil. Inspect the outgoing blank and the parent-coil end; a stroke may leave a burr toward one face and a different lip on the opposite end.
Measure relaxed shape and surface
Check squareness, length, curl, waviness and visible scratches after discharge. Compare first, middle and end-of-roll blanks for feed drift and blade wear. A clamp may temporarily suppress coil set, so record dimensions using the buyer’s stated conditioning method.
Interleave and identify sheets
Agree a nonmarking interleaf or tray and stack without dragging metal across metal. Label grade, temper, finish, lot and rolling direction. The buyer must separately validate stamping, adhesion or corrosion requirements after its actual next process.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Produce drawing-controlled flat foil lengths.
- Preserve both crosscut edges and broad-face finish.
- Control coil set, curl and handling scratches.
- Keep each stack traceable to its source coil.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Corners curl immediately after cutting
- Check shear support and discharge pickup.
- Compare material temper and incoming coil set.
Length changes with coil diameter
- Inspect feed slip and changing unwind drag.
- Measure across a full sequence.
Sheets scratch during stacking
- Review tray, interleaf and pickup contact.
- Inspect both faces before and after packaging.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Supported transverse shear pair | For straight rectangular stainless foil blanks. | Confirm both-end burr, length, squareness and flatness. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Stainless grade, gauge and temper
- Surface finish and rolling direction
- Released blank length, width and squareness
- Allowed curl, burr and scratch limits
- Feed registration and shear support
- Nonmarking takeoff and interleaf
- Coil-lot and stack labeling
- Receiving operation and test owner
Questions About This Cutting Application
Is a rectangle a finished spring?
No. This step provides flat foil feed blanks.
Why measure after release?
Coil set can return after the blank leaves the fixture.
Why check the parent end?
It becomes the first end of the next blank.
Can all grades use one shear setting?
No. The specified grade and temper need a trial.
What information starts the RFQ?
Send foil certificate, blank drawing and acceptable edge examples.
Public references and scope
These public sources provide material, cutting-method or safety context for this guide. Supplier pages describe their own materials or equipment; they do not establish a MEIRENTE blade specification or performance claim.
