Transformer Crepe Insulation Paper Cut-to-Size Blades
Weidmann and Hitachi Energy describe crepe paper supplied in rolls for insulating irregular transformer shapes, especially leads and surfaces where flat paper cannot conform. Cindus lists sheeting among its paper-converting services. This guide concerns rectangular flat lengths cut from a verified crepe-paper sheet or strip when a buyer’s wrapping plan calls for discrete pieces. It does not describe cutting an already formed crepe tube. The crepe stretch direction and the length measurement state must be defined because pulling the paper to its full extension can change an apparent dimension. A supported transverse blade can be trialed on the specific grade. The completed conductor wrap and transformer assembly remain subject to the buyer’s electrical test plan.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Define the developed wrap blank
Specify the unextended length, width and number of laps required by the approved lead-wrap design. Record crepe direction and whether the paper will be wrapped dry or after an owner-defined conditioning step. Separate blank sizes before cutting to prevent a long wrap being mixed with a short one.
Hold the paper without flattening its ridges
Trial a straight crosscut with gentle support rather than stretching the piece to make it feed. Inspect the outgoing blank and the remaining web end for torn crepe peaks, edge fiber pullout and skew. Note any recoil after the hold-down is released.
Measure under the approved relaxed state
Check blank length and squareness using the buyer’s specified handling force. Compare first and last pieces to catch slip or blade wear. Inspect all four edges and broad faces for creases that were unintentionally crushed during transfer.
Pack for actual conductor wrapping
Stack lengths without compressing or contaminating the crepe texture, and retain grade and lot labels. The transformer maker must demonstrate coverage around its lead geometry, then apply any drying, impregnation and electrical tests. A rectangular cut alone does not set finished overlap or dielectric strength.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Supply released relaxed-size wrap blanks.
- Avoid torn or crushed crepe ridges.
- Control both-end fiber condition and squareness.
- Preserve identity for later lead wrapping.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Length changes when measured by different operators
- Define handling tension and conditioning.
- Compare relaxed and stretched measurements.
Crosscut tears at crepe peaks
- Check support and blade edge.
- Inspect both stroke sides.
Blanks wrinkle in packing
- Review stack pressure and orientation.
- Compare pre-pack and post-pack samples.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Supported transverse shear | For straight crepe-paper rectangles from a specified flat or roll feed. | Check relaxed length, squareness and ridge integrity. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Why not measure a fully stretched blank?
The drawing must specify the handling state; forced extension is not a neutral dimension.
Is this the same as slitting a narrow roll?
No. It sets a discrete piece length across paper travel.
Can cut-to-size blanks replace a crepe tube?
Only if the transformer design specifies flat wrap pieces.
Does a correct blank ensure lead coverage?
No. Coverage must be checked on the actual conductor geometry.
What should be submitted?
Send the paper grade, developed wrap drawing and measurement method.
