Tantalum Metal Foil Cut-To-Length Blades
Admat offers coiled tantalum strip and foil as well as tantalum sheets cut to selected dimensions; Goodfellow lists tantalum foil in continuous coil form. Those formats support a coil-to-sheet cut-to-length operation when the buyer needs rectangular blanks for a later die, furnace component or other assembly. The blade passes across the feed direction and releases finite pieces. It does not make narrow slit coils or stamped contours. The correct feed and blade support depend on actual tantalum grade, thickness, anneal condition and any surface requirement.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Define each rectangular blank
Obtain length, full usable width, squareness and rolling direction from the drawing. Decide whether a later blanking die or forming step needs additional stock. Label the requested purity or alloy and processing route before cutting; Admat notes these choices can affect later drawing. Do not infer a single grade from the word tantalum.
Feed under controlled tension
Unwind and flatten enough foil for a repeatable transverse stroke without stretching it or scuffing the surface. Test whether the incoming coil set causes the released blank to curl. Register length against the moving web and verify it again on a relaxed sheet, not only at the encoder.
Trial a supported crosscut
Use a straight cross-shear or another buyer-approved transverse tool on the actual material. Support entry and exit so the foil does not buckle or fold into the blade. Examine whether the top and underside have different burrs. A blade that cuts thicker tantalum strip may need a different setup for very thin foil.
Inspect the blank, not just the machine
Measure length on both sides, width and squareness after release. Examine both cross edges for burr, rollover, slivers, small tears and contamination; inspect the broad faces for feeder marks. Retain a control from the same coil to separate pre-existing surface condition from converter damage.
Hand off in a protected stack
Mark lot, grade, rolling direction and face orientation. Interleave only if the buyer permits it, and prevent a sharp blank corner from scoring its neighbor. Trial the first accepted sheet through the downstream stamping or forming step. A rectangular blank is an intermediate stock form; final corrosion, vacuum or electronic performance belongs to the finished part. Compare the first blank after an unwind restart with later pieces, since a stopped web can relax before the next index. Keep rejected end cuts separate so their burrs do not scratch accepted foil during collection. Use the buyer’s measurement convention.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Release flat finite tantalum foil blanks.
- Keep length and squareness after relaxation.
- Limit burr, wrinkles and surface scratches.
- Preserve metal grade and orientation.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Blank length changes after release
- Review web tension and coil set.
- Measure at both sides.
- Test relaxed blanks.
Cross edge folds at cutter exit
- Support the last foil segment.
- Check blade gap and edge condition.
- Inspect lower face for burr.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Supported transverse shear blade | For repeated straight lengths from specified coil stock. | Confirm full-width separation and squareness. |
| Guided cross-web cutter | For compatible foil under controlled feed. | Inspect entry/exit rollover and broad-face marks. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Tantalum grade, purity and foil condition
- Incoming width and target blank length
- Rolling direction and later allowance
- Support and stack method

Questions About This Cutting Application
Does cut to length create a shaped part?
No. It makes a rectangular sheet for any later contour operation.
Is this a longitudinal coil slit?
No. The knife cuts across the feed and releases finite blanks.
Why measure after relaxation?
Coil set and web tension can alter a released piece.
Does a clean rectangle certify end use?
No. The assembled or formed part needs separate verification.
