Rolled-Annealed Copper Foil Strip Edge-Trimming Blades
CIVEN describes rolled copper foil being slit to customer widths after rolling and annealing; Tex Technology identifies RA foil for flexible electronics. A single-edge trim is a narrower decision than a full multi-lane slit: it discards a documented outer margin while the principal web remains. The operation is suitable only when a coil-width plan allows that loss, such as a handling-damaged outer edge or a nonusable mill margin. DIENES documents paired shear slitting of nonferrous foil as a candidate mechanism. The buyer must confirm the RA grade, surface treatment and retained width before tool selection. Trimming will not remove defects extending into the useful laminate area and it will not repair a contaminated copper face.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Measure the damaged margin first
Map notches, edge wave, tears and any surface treatment disruption against the source width. Decide which side is waste and how much retained copper the laminate maker needs. If the defect crosses that limit, reject the section or request a new disposition rather than moving the blade inward.
Protect the retained face during trim
Guide the coil on approved contact surfaces, keeping the adhesion-treated face identified. Try one shear pair and arrange a controlled narrow waste takeoff. Inspect whether scrap snaps into copper slivers or touches the useful web as it winds.
Examine the new edge and opposite edge
Check width at reel start, center and tail. Look for burr rollover, tiny tears, local stretching and edge curl; compare with both the original damaged margin and an uncut control. Inspect the opposite edge because guide pressure can introduce a second problem.
Release the continuous main roll
Rewind without telescoping and record trimmed side, source coil and final usable width. The laminate maker should test adhesion and subsequent flex processing on a sample. A new bright edge is a mechanical observation, not evidence that the surface will bond or the circuit will survive cycling.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Remove only the approved outer waste strip.
- Preserve the minimum laminate-useful width.
- Avoid new burrs, slivers and treatment damage.
- Provide traceable before-and-after edge samples.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Fresh edge tears follow trimming
- Compare shear engagement and original roll damage.
- Check foil temper and web tension.
Narrow trim sticks to useful copper
- Review waste takeoff and static/guide behavior.
- Inspect rewound reel for trapped slivers.
Retained width drifts below drawing
- Check edge guide against incoming width variation.
- Measure across the full reel, not only setup.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Single paired rotary shear station | When a narrow documented outer margin can be removed safely. | Confirm new edge, retained width and continuous waste capture. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is edge trimming the same as multi-lane slitting?
No. It removes an outside margin from one main web.
Should every RA copper roll be trimmed?
No. Only an approved margin or width requirement justifies the pass.
Can it repair scratches inside the useful face?
No. Those need separate material disposition.
Why measure after rewinding?
Tracking and tension can change the retained width and edge shape.
What evidence helps approval?
A defect map, width drawing and before/after coil samples.
