Ultra-Thin Stainless-Steel Foil Strip Edge-Trimming Blades
Ulbrich describes finished-gauge foil slitting and Nippon Steel Chemical & Material identifies ultrathin stainless stock with controlled thickness and formability. An edge trim is justified only when a measured outside margin is damaged or the buyer’s width drawing requires it. The step retains one principal continuous foil web and removes a narrow waste ribbon; it is distinct from dividing the coil into several finished lanes. DIENES describes shear knives for thin metal webs, but on ultrathin stainless the trial must account for metal fragments, trim curling and strain at the retained edge. A trim cannot restore a scratched central face or a crack extending beyond the allowed margin.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Map the edge condition and usable width
Identify incoming edge wave, nicks or winding damage, then mark their maximum reach into the web. Compare that map with the receiving press or laminate’s minimum width. If enough good material will not remain, request supplier disposition rather than pushing the cut inward.
Set one stable longitudinal cut
Reference a web guide from the sound edge and trial a single shear station. Collect the narrow stainless waste before it can coil around a roller or cut edge. Monitor foil flutter beside the shear; tension that steadies the waste may wrinkle the retained product.
Inspect retained and discarded edges
Examine the new edge for burr, notches, curling and local width loss. Check the opposite original edge after guiding and look for fine fragments on both foil faces. Measure along the reel, not just at startup, to catch source-width drift.
Prove the roll still feeds
Rewind the main web and run a short trial through the receiving press or laminate feed. Note edge snagging, camber and surface marks. A visually bright trimmed edge may still perform poorly in a tight precision guide if it carries an upturned lip.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Remove only a documented unusable margin.
- Preserve minimum usable width and flatness.
- Capture slender waste and metallic fragments.
- Retain before/after edge evidence.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Waste strip repeatedly breaks
- Review trim width and takeoff tension.
- Inspect pre-existing edge cracks.
New retained edge has hooked burrs
- Check shear engagement and knife wear.
- Compare both faces at multiple coil positions.
Opposite edge acquires scratches
- Inspect edge guide pressure and contact surface.
- Compare pre-trim control.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Single paired rotary shear at one edge | For a mapped defect wholly outside the useful width. | Confirm sound retained edge, width and waste takeoff. |
Information to Send for Technical Review

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is this multi-lane coil slitting?
No. One outside strip is removed and the main foil web remains.
Should every mill edge be trimmed?
No. A sound edge may already meet the drawing.
Can a trim fix broad-face scratches?
No. Face defects need separate disposition.
Why trial the receiving feed?
A small burr can snag even when width passes.
What should the quote include?
Send a defect map, retained-width drawing and actual foil sample.
