Nickel-Clad Copper Strip Edge-Trimming Blades
Raytron describes nickel-clad copper as a bonded strip, distinct from a nickel-plated copper surface, and includes rolling and slitting in its process description. The nickel-to-copper layer ratio and face construction must come from the actual mill certificate. This guide concerns one narrow longitudinal edge trim only when the buyer has mapped an unusable margin or specified a narrower retained width. It does not assume every delivered strip requires another cut. A paired rotary shear is a candidate for continuous metal strip, but the trial must examine both the new edge and the bond near it. A bright, square looking edge cannot establish weldability, corrosion behavior or battery connection performance.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Map the suspect edge before setting knives
Mark the original left and right edges, nickel-bearing face or faces, coil travel and position of any delamination, burr or width loss. Compare the defect depth with the minimum usable-width drawing. A trim line must stay outside the retained conductor; cutting through a bond failure that extends inward merely creates a new exposed defect.
Choose a one-sided waste path
Set one upper and lower shear pair against the selected margin and establish stable guide reference from the sound side. Feed a short representative section at planned tension. Watch whether the narrow trim ribbon remains continuous or curls into guides, since a broken strip can score the nickel surface of the product coil.
Examine the metal interface at the new edge
Inspect top and bottom faces and a transverse cross section for nickel lift, exposed copper outside the approved boundary and rolled-over lips. Measure retained width at several coil positions. Keep before-and-after specimens from the same locations to distinguish incoming bond defects from knife damage.
Release only after joining trials
Rewind the retained strip with edge protection and layer orientation labels. Have the buyer trial its specific weld or joint, including the face intended to contact the mating part. The converting result is an edge and width decision; electrical and environmental performance must be assessed on the assembled connection.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Remove only a documented unusable side margin.
- Retain the buyer’s minimum conductive width and nickel-face identity.
- Avoid fresh layer lift, chips and damaging burrs.
- Provide traceable specimens for later joining trials.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Nickel skin lifts beside the shear line
- Compare incoming bond condition with cut-side microsections.
- Review knife side load, support and strip tension.
Thin edge waste breaks and wraps a guide
- Check the chosen trim width and takeoff path.
- Inspect whether fragments contact the good face.
Retained width varies down the coil
- Review edge guide reference and source-strip camber.
- Measure more than the startup sample.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Single matched rotary shear pair | For a measured bad margin that lies outside a released useful width. | Check layer continuity, burr direction, waste travel and retained width. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is nickel cladding the same as nickel plating?
No. Raytron distinguishes bonded nickel-clad copper from a plated surface; obtain the actual layer construction.
Should every nickel-clad strip be edge trimmed?
No. Trim is conditional on measured edge damage or a specified useful-width boundary.
Why inspect a cross section?
A surface view can hide a lifted nickel layer or a damaged copper-to-nickel interface.
Can edge inspection approve a battery weld?
No. The buyer must validate its joining method on the converted strip.
What sample should be sent for a blade trial?
Provide a labeled coil section, layer certificate, bad-edge map and retained-width drawing.
