Polyimide-Mica Insulation Laminate Contour-Cutting Blades
MAFEL says its NKN 3957 mica-containing aramid/polyimide laminate can be supplied as shaped and die-cut pieces. Coveme describes another named mica-containing polyimide laminate for slot and phase insulation. These are direct examples of contoured flexible multilayer insulation, but exact constructions differ and must not be mixed under one unqualified knife setting. This guide covers a buyer-approved flat profile with curved ends, slots or indexing notches cut from the specified sheet. Small internal features can start paper pullout or polyimide-film tearing, so a straight test cut is not enough. The part maker must validate the finished shape after any bending, insertion and electrical stress testing.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Register the contour to the installation drawing
Mark slot opening, phase barrier path, fold lines, holes and any winding-head clearance. Identify whether mica-bearing faces must remain outward. Keep enough material around notches to avoid an unsupported narrow mineral-paper bridge.
Pilot the most demanding feature
Use a die or guided contour blade on actual laminate, beginning with the tightest inside corner and narrowest tongue. Inspect whether the aramid face frays while the polyimide center stretches, or whether a die stroke lifts an adhesive bond near a hole.
Inspect part and skeleton
Measure contour-to-notch location and compare both faces. Collect loose mineral particles and slugs before they transfer to useful parts. Review skeleton scrap for torn bridges that show where the cut failed, even if the blank looks intact at first glance.
Fit and test under the buyer’s sequence
Place trial pieces into the customer fixture and perform the actual fold or insertion. A small notch can propagate a tear during forming. The electrical equipment maker then tests its assembled insulation; a profile photo cannot establish partial-discharge or thermal endurance.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Match the released profile and notch positions.
- Prevent face-paper pullout and film tearing.
- Keep cut particles and slugs away from parts.
- Retain orientation for motor fitting.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Notch edge loses mica-bearing paper
- Review die support and blade wear.
- Compare incoming paper cohesion.
Polyimide film stretches at a small radius
- Inspect knife clearance and feature geometry.
- Compare both cut directions.
Skeleton bridges tear before ejection
- Review nesting and material feed.
- Look for damage transferred to neighboring parts.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Matched punch and die | For a repeatable approved NKN-type part outline. | Check all ply edges, notch location and scrap release. |
| Guided contour knife | For low-volume trials or profiles requiring a different support method. | Check tight features against later forming. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is NKN the same as bare polyimide film?
No. The specified mica-containing NKN-type grade has aramid-paper faces around a polyimide-film center; verify the grade because NKN is not inherently mica-bearing.
Why test an internal notch?
It concentrates cutting and later forming strain.
Can a straight sample represent a die profile?
No. Curves and small bridges may fail differently.
Does contour accuracy certify electrical service?
No. The assembled insulation system must be qualified.
What should a tool request include?
Send the exact grade, part drawing and edge-defect examples.
