Amorphous Metal Ribbon Strip Edge-Trimming Blades
Metglas states that its amorphous alloys are cast as thin ribbons and that the stock can be slit. It also describes sharp ribbon edges and material-dependent widths. A separate edge trim is sensible only if a buyer has measured a defective outer margin or needs a defined usable width; many ribbons are supplied at a usable width already. This guide concerns removal of a controlled strip from one edge of loose, unannealed coil stock while retaining the central ribbon. A rotary shear pair is a candidate because DIENES documents continuous foil-web shear cutting, but the selected alloy and cast-edge condition require a trial. Trimming cannot repair defects that extend into the retained width, and the core maker must still qualify the ribbon after assembly.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Map the actual casting-edge defect
Photograph and measure the affected outer margin along the parent coil. Separate isolated notches from repeating edge roughness and width wander. A constant trim allowance will not solve an intermittent crack that reaches farther into the useful strip.
Reference the cut from the good side
Specify which edge is retained and which becomes waste. Set the guide and shear line to protect the minimum useful width while keeping the waste strip continuous enough for safe takeoff. Reversing coil face or travel direction may put the defect on the other knife side.
Inspect the new edge against the old one
Check edge chips, upturned lips and tiny shards on the retained side. Examine whether the trim process introduces a worse crack than the original cast edge. Measure retained width at several coil positions and confirm the edge can be wound without snagging.
Escalate defects beyond the trim allowance
Stop if cracks remain inside the released width or the waste strip breaks into loose fragments. Preserve traceable rejected sections for mill review. The magnetic-core maker should run a limited build and test, since a uniform edge alone does not establish final magnetic behavior.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Remove only the documented unusable margin.
- Preserve the released retained width along the coil.
- Keep waste fragments away from magnetic ribbon.
- Document the original and new edge condition.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
A trimmed edge has fresh microchips
- Check upper/lower knife engagement and blade wear.
- Compare both reel faces and incoming defect map.
Narrow waste repeatedly snaps
- Review waste width, takeoff tension and existing cast cracks.
- Inspect whether chips enter the useful reel.
Retained width falls below drawing
- Review edge guiding and upstream cast-width variation.
- Measure at reel positions beyond the setup sample.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Single rotary shear pair at one edge | When a documented casting-margin defect lies wholly outside the retained width. | Confirm continuous waste removal and sound retained-edge samples. |
| No-trim acceptance or mill replacement | If supplied ribbon meets the drawing, or cracks cross the proposed trim line. | Approve the alternative through the material owner rather than cutting blindly. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Must every cast ribbon edge be trimmed?
No. Trim only when the buyer identifies a real defective margin or released width need.
Does trimming remove cracks inside the good width?
No. Cracks crossing the cut line require separate disposition.
Why use one shear pair?
This operation removes one waste margin rather than dividing the full coil into several lanes.
What should be kept as evidence?
Keep labeled before-and-after edge specimens with position on the source coil.
Can a clean edge certify magnetic loss?
No. Finished-core testing remains with the core maker.
