AGM Battery Separator Mat Sheet Slitting Blades
An absorbent glass mat is a porous, compressible separator, not simply a white paper web. Microporous lists glass-only and glass-synthetic constructions with different grammage and thickness. When a flat AGM sheet is slit into parallel bands, edge appearance and strip width must be checked alongside fiber loss and the measurement condition used after compression. Compare samples before winding and after the normal handling route; a strip that leaves the knives straight may shed or distort later. Choose the blade pair and overlap from the installed slitter drawing and a trial on the buyer’s grade.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Measure the mat as supplied
Record grade, grammage, sheet width and thickness under the customer’s stated load. Keep an uncut control from the same lot. The compressible mat should not be compared against a dimension measured under a different contact pressure.
Map every slitting lane
Mark the intended slit positions and finished band widths. Compare outer lanes with center lanes for skew or asymmetric fiber pull. If the mat is fed as flat sheets, document how each sheet is registered; if it is a web, record its guide and tension settings.
Inspect both cut surfaces
Examine each pair of new edges for fiber pullout and loose debris, then repeat after the buyer’s usual winding or stacking step. Keep the collected waste separate from accepted bands so edge shedding can be traced to its position.
Separate compression from cutting faults
Track feed-roller or hold-down pressure during the trial. A crushed band can pass an immediate width check yet fail thickness or recovery inspection after release. Compare with the accepted control before changing knife geometry.
Release by the buyer’s method
Apply the agreed width, cleanliness and compressed-thickness criteria to samples from the start, middle and end of the run. Use the actual separator grade and downstream handling path for acceptance.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Deliver all AGM bands at the specified width under the buyer’s measurement condition.
- Limit loose glass fibers on both newly cut edges and after handling.
- Preserve the accepted compressed thickness and recovery behavior.
- Keep lane-to-lane variation and waste transfer within agreed limits.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Center and outer bands show different widths
- Check lane positions and web registration against the strip map.
- Measure under the same defined contact pressure.
- Compare feed skew and blade-holder settings before adjusting one knife.
Glass fibers pull out of one new edge
- Inspect top and bottom knife condition and overlap.
- Compare edge samples from the same lot at matching lane positions.
- Check whether winding or handling adds the loose fibers after cutting.
Thickness falls after the slitting trial
- Record roller and hold-down load.
- Compare the slit band with an uncut control after the same recovery time.
- Keep the cutting fault separate from compression during feed or packing.
A narrow waste band contaminates accepted strips
- Trace its takeoff path and break points.
- Inspect product surfaces after winding or stacking.
- Collect and label waste by lane during the trial.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Paired circular slitter knives | For a compatible continuous or indexed AGM slitting line that supports the mat at the cut. | Match arbor, upper and lower knife geometry, overlap and holder stability to the machine drawing; trial for fiber shedding. |
| Supported straight shear set | For an intermittent flat-sheet operation when the machine provides suitable hold-down and support. | Check blade length, shear engagement and support pressure on the supplied mat; compare thickness after release. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Why record a compression condition for a slit width trial?
AGM compresses. A width or thickness result is only comparable when the buyer states how and when it is measured.
Which edge should be inspected?
Inspect both sides of every slit and sample again after the normal handling path; loose fibers may appear after winding or stacking.
Does a straight band prove the separator passed?
No. Apply the buyer’s width, cleanliness and compressed-thickness criteria to the actual grade.
Can a paper slitter setting be copied?
Do not assume so. Compare support, knife engagement and fiber shedding on the AGM stock supplied for the order.
What should accompany an RFQ?
Send the band layout, mat grade, compressed-thickness method, machine drawings and accepted edge samples.
