Rolled-Annealed Copper Foil Precision Coil Slitting Blades

Tex Technology describes rolled-annealed copper foil for flexible circuits, and CIVEN outlines rolling, annealing and slitting to customer width. Schlenk also documents wide metal foil rolls slit to narrower supply widths. This guide concerns a bare, identified rolled-annealed (RA) copper foil parent coil before lamination or etching; it is not a finished flexible printed circuit. A paired rotary shear is one candidate for a metal web, as DIENES describes. RA foil grade, temper, treated face and later laminate process matter more than a generic knife label. The converter must prove the slit does not introduce raised burrs, scratches or stretched edges that interfere with the buyer’s subsequent copper-clad laminate. Conductivity, peel strength and flex-circuit life remain downstream qualification tasks.

Where This Cutting Application Appears

Lay out widths against the flexible-circuit build

Take lane widths from the approved copper-clad laminate schedule rather than assuming finished trace width. Identify whether one face is treated for resin adhesion and where the treatment may contact guides. Record machine direction, coil lot and any mill edge that must remain outside the usable lane.

Trial paired knives on the actual temper

Measure incoming thickness and flatness and record upper/lower shear engagement. Start with a short coupon, examining burr direction on both new edges. A softer annealed foil may roll or stretch at the cut even when a harder copper setup looks acceptable.

Inspect surface and rewind together

Check scratches, copper slivers, edge curl and lane-width variation at several coil positions. Rewind with controlled tension and verify that narrow rolls do not telescope or imprint their edge into adjacent turns. Keep trim waste away from any adhesion-treated face.

Qualify the receiving laminate

Give the buyer traceable narrow coils for its own surface preparation, layup and etching trial. A slit roll should be sampled after unpacking as well as immediately after cutting. A smooth-looking edge cannot establish the final circuit’s bend life or electrical performance.

Define the Required Cut Result

  • Deliver documented RA copper foil lane widths.
  • Preserve treated surface and rolling direction.
  • Limit burrs, slivers and edge curl.
  • Maintain traceable wound coils for lamination.

Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife

A copper lip rises on one slit side

  • Review upper/lower knife engagement and foil temper.
  • Compare both retained edges under the buyer’s magnification.

Narrow lanes telescope

  • Review differential rewind and core condition.
  • Measure width after relaxation and unpacking.

Scratches appear near a treated face

  • Trace knife, guide and trim contact.
  • Compare an uncut parent-roll control.

Information to Send for Technical Review

You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.

  • Exact RA copper grade, thickness and temper
  • Treated/untreated face identification
  • Parent roll width and target lane drawing
  • Permitted surface-contact and cleanliness controls
  • Knife pair and rewind layout
  • Allowed burr, sliver and width criteria
  • Lot and machine-direction marking
  • Receiving laminate and flex-test plan

Questions About This Cutting Application

Is this cutting finished FPC traces?

No. It divides bare copper foil before lamination and circuit patterning.

Why record the treated face?

That face may be reserved for resin adhesion and can be damaged by guides.

Can annealed copper use a fixed shear setting?

No. Confirm edge behavior on the specified grade and temper.

Does a clean slit prove circuit flex life?

No. The laminate and etched circuit require separate tests.

What starts a useful RFQ?

Provide source-coil certificate, lane plan and surface acceptance examples.
