Polyimide-Mica Insulation Laminate Sheet Slitting Blades
Coveme describes a flexible motor-insulation laminate with a polyimide film between mica-containing Nomex layers. MAFEL lists a related NKN grade made with polyimide film and mica-containing aramid paper, offered as slit rolls, cut pieces and shaped parts. These named constructions establish the workpiece form; they do not mean every “polyimide-mica” product has the same backing or binder. This guide uses a verified NKN-type flat sheet and divides it lengthwise into straight strips for later motor slot or phase insulation work. A flat-sheet slitting method must be qualified on the actual grade and thickness. Inspect the polyimide center, mineral-paper faces and bond at every new edge. The equipment maker determines final dielectric and partial-discharge performance.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Identify the exact mica-bearing construction
Obtain the supplier grade, mica-containing aramid face description, polyimide-film thickness and total laminate gauge. Mark machine direction and intended strip widths on the flat sheet. Do not substitute a two-ply mica tape or bare polyimide film without a new trial.
Support the sheet and collect edge residue
Trial a guided long cut on a representative flat sheet. Restrain both faces to reduce differential drag and keep the narrow strips from rolling over at the blade. Collect paper/mineral edge debris at the source so it cannot settle on neighboring strips.
Inspect new edges through the laminate stack
Measure width and straightness along each strip. Check for paper-face fray, loose mica-containing particles, polyimide film projection and local separation between film and paper. Compare the entrance and exit sides of the cut rather than averaging them into a single edge result.
Transfer to motor-part finishing
Bundle strips without bending tight enough to crack the mineral-bearing face. Label grade and direction for later cutting or forming. The motor maker should evaluate slot insertion, impregnation and finished electrical behavior on the actual assembly.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Create specified straight strips from a verified NKN-type sheet.
- Limit mineral-paper debris and polyimide-film lip.
- Preserve ply adhesion and lot identity.
- Provide feed strips for later slot parts.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Mineral-paper fibers shed along the edge
- Review blade condition and face restraint.
- Compare incoming paper cohesion.
Polyimide projects beyond paper layers
- Check differential drag and blade alignment.
- Inspect both cut faces under magnification.
A narrow strip curls after separation
- Review sheet stress and strip direction.
- Measure after relaxation.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Guided straight sheet slitter | For flat mica-containing polyimide laminate divided lengthwise into strips. | Check width, each ply edge and debris. |
| Supported long straight shear | For flat sheets of a named mica-containing grade when the supplier-slit roll is not the requested format. | Compare edge debris, film projection and strip taper on a real sheet. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is this a pure mica sheet?
No. The named Coveme and MAFEL grades discussed here have mica-containing aramid faces around a polyimide-film center; NKN alone does not guarantee mica content.
Is a polyimide film enough to predict the edge?
No. The mineral-paper faces and adhesive bond must also be inspected.
Why collect fine edge material?
Loose debris can transfer onto insulation surfaces and obscure inspection.
Can the strip certify partial-discharge behavior?
No. Test the assembled insulation system under the customer’s method.
What begins a quotation?
Provide the named laminate sample, strip layout and layer-edge acceptance.
