Gas-Turbine Intake Filter Media Shear Slitting Blades
Gas-turbine intake filter media can be microglass, synthetic, cellulose-synthetic or multilayer stock, depending on the element design and operating environment. Shear slitting creates the narrower lanes used before pleating or panel forming. Establish the actual grade and fiber arrangement before blade setup; nominal filter class does not define the edge quality or knife clearance.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Select the actual turbine-media family
Ahlstrom lists Trinitex multilayer media, microglass, nanofiber-coated cellulose-synthetic and fully synthetic grades for gas-turbine intake. Their edges will not respond identically. Identify the purchased construction and whether it serves a static or pulse-jet element before selecting trial knives.
Define pleater lane geometry
Shear slit the parent web lengthwise into lanes sized for the element’s pleat height or panel width. Mark the upstream face, especially for nanofiber-coated grades. Measure width and edge straightness through an entire trial roll rather than one cut sample.
Protect thin functional layers
Inspect a microglass edge for brittle fiber release and a nanofiber grade for coating disruption or face scuff. The inspection method should be agreed for that grade; a macro photograph alone may hide a damaged upstream coating.
Trial rotary-knife support
Record arbor runout, spacer stack, overlap, side clearance and web support on the existing shear slitter. Review the cut after winding; a lane can curl or rub during transfer to the pleater and fail even if the knife station looked clean.
Separate conversion from element testing
Pleat and assemble representative lanes to check edge robustness under the chosen static or pulse-cleaning format. Turbine protection, dust holding, pulse endurance and pressure drop require the filter maker’s element tests.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Hold lane widths and straightness to the supplied layout.
- Meet the agreed edge-fiber and particle limits.
- Retain media layers and coatings through the cut and winding path.
- Separate trim without contaminating accepted lanes.
- Apply the buyer’s material-specific acceptance plan for gas-turbine intake filter media.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Width varies between lanes
- Check spacer stack, arbor seating and knife position.
- Measure parent-web movement and edge guide stability.
- Sample every lane at several run positions.
One edge sheds more than its mate
- Inspect both knife edges and actual side clearance.
- Check support and media direction at the nip.
- Compare the same material lot across knife positions.
A slit lane curls or wrinkles
- Locate the first point of distortion.
- Review tension, guide contact and winding separation.
- Compare with an uncut control sample.
Trim breaks or wraps
- Record trim width and break location.
- Inspect scrap takeoff, knife condition and tension.
- Check whether broken trim transfers debris to accepted media.
A fine surface layer peels back after slitting
- Identify the actual layer and its feed-side orientation.
- Check cutting engagement and guide contact after the nip.
- Compare the edge immediately after cutting and after pleating or winding.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Matched circular shear slitter knives | For continuous longitudinal separation on a compatible paired-knife line. | Confirm arbor, edge geometry, side clearance, overlap and machine limits from drawings. |
| Circular edge-trim pair | When only the outside allowance is removed before or during lane conversion. | Confirm trim width, scrap route and retained-edge criteria. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
What is shear slitting?
A paired rotary shear station produces longitudinal media lanes; a cross cutter makes discrete sheets and serves a different layout.
Does a nominal media thickness fix the knife clearance?
No. Microglass, nanofiber-coated and synthetic grades need separate trials because their edges and surfaces differ.
Should every lane be inspected?
Inspect each lane position, with special attention to a functional upstream coating and outer waste-trim edge.
Can cut quality be judged before rewinding?
Inspect at the knife, after rewinding and after pleating, where a brittle or coated edge can shed or scuff.
Does a clean edge guarantee filtration or membrane performance?
No. A clean conversion edge cannot establish filter class, pulse durability or turbine protection without assembly-level tests.
Does a clean slit certify gas-turbine filter class?
No. Filter class and element durability require the manufacturer’s assembly-level tests.
