Effervescent Tablet Sachet Laminate Rotary Die-Cutting Blades
The workpiece is an unfilled effervescent-tablet sachet laminate web. HERMES PHARMA and Tower Laboratories document foil pouch or strip materials for moisture-sensitive effervescent tablets; RotoMetrics describes rotary die stations for flexible packaging webs. A rotary die makes a repeating shape, notch, opening or blank against a mating surface. It is not merely slitting the web into lanes, and this guide does not assume cutting through a filled sachet. The buyer must define which layer, if any, is cut through at a tear feature and how the feature stays outside the sealed dose cavity. Trial the complete printed laminate and inspect registration and foil integrity. No blade profile alone qualifies an opening feature, child-resistance claim or moisture barrier.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Classify the repeat feature
Provide a drawing that states whether the die makes a complete perimeter blank, a tear-start notch or a partial-depth score. Mark the future cavity, longitudinal and transverse seals, print mark and waste islands. If no shaped repeat is needed, a simpler cross cutter may be the appropriate process.
Register die and anvil to print
Measure cylinder repeat, web pitch, artwork position and infeed tension. Trial the actual foil laminate, not plain film. Verify that a notch remains where the pack design permits it after heat sealing and that the opposite face is not unintentionally pierced.
Control waste and layer damage
Inspect foil cracking around tight radii, sealant strings in a cutout, paper fibers and retained slugs. Plan matrix or slug removal before the web reaches a filling station. Compare early and later samples for die buildup or pressure drift.
Qualify the intended package feature
Run die-cut trial material through the packaging owner’s forming and sealing equipment. Inspect tear opening, seal width and package integrity using their approved criteria. A visually neat notch that crosses a seal path or exposes foil can be unacceptable for an effervescent product.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Place repeated die features at the approved artwork and seal datum.
- Sever only the specified layers and retain a continuous intended barrier.
- Remove every slug without contaminating package contact surfaces.
- Deliver traceable web samples for final pack testing.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Tear notch shifts toward a seal
- Check cylinder repeat against print pitch.
- Review web tension and sensor registration.
- Inspect first and last repeats after line startup.
Partial-depth score penetrates foil
- Review die-to-anvil pressure and layer orientation.
- Inspect backside under buyer method.
- Check wear or local high spots on the cylinder.
Small waste island remains attached
- Inspect die sharpness and ejection.
- Check sealant strings and static.
- Trace where the slug enters the downstream web path.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Engraved rotary die with matched anvil | For a fixed repeating blank or notch on a compatible flexible-packaging web line. | Confirm repeat, layer cut depth, anvil and waste removal from machine drawings. |
| Flexible rotary die on magnetic cylinder | For an approved repeated shallow feature when the station supports that die system. | Trial score depth and foil/barrier integrity on the actual laminate; do not assume universal compatibility. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Laminate layer stack and printed web sample
- Feature drawing distinguishing notch, score and full blank
- Future cavity and both seal-band boundaries
- Cylinder repeat, anvil and registration system
- Required layer cut depth and permitted backing marks
- Waste/slug collection plan
- Accepted foil crack and edge samples
- Buyer opening and sealed-pack qualification method
Questions About This Cutting Application
Is rotary die cutting the same as longitudinal slitting?
No. The die repeats a shaped feature or discrete blank; slitting makes continuous lanes.
Can a die cut be made after sachets are filled?
Only if the packaging line and buyer specification explicitly support that station. This guide treats unfilled laminate.
How is a tear notch kept safe?
Locate it against the approved seal and cavity drawing, then test the finished package.
Why inspect the backside?
A score intended for one layer may pierce foil or mark the opposite face without an obvious front-side defect.
What is the most important RFQ drawing?
The feature profile together with artwork repeat, layer-depth instruction and future seal lands.
