Aluminum Battery-Tab Stock Precision Coil Slitting Blades

Iwatani identifies aluminum foil as a cathode lead material for cylindrical batteries and describes ultra-precise slitting of metal lead stock. This provides a direct workpiece and process basis, but the buyer must state the actual alloy, surface, gauge and cell design. Here “tab stock” means unassembled aluminum lead foil or strip intended for later tab cutting or joining. It is not an already coated electrode web, an exposed collector tab protruding from an electrode or a sealed pouch-cell lead. Neuenkamp describes knife options for battery foil slitting; the final choice needs a trial on this aluminum supply. A slit edge can be checked for burr and loose particles, while weld quality and cell safety require separate product testing.

Where This Cutting Application Appears

Define the lead-stock coil rather than the electrode web

Get the material certificate, supplied width and uncoated-face condition. Confirm that the material is a stand-alone aluminum cathode lead, not coating-bearing current collector. Mark which lanes will become later tab widths and reserve margins required by the tab cutter or weld fixture.

Trial lane separation and controlled rewind

Use a representative coil section and test the candidate knife pair at planned support and tension. Inspect both new edges for burr direction, wrinkling and metal fines. Keep outside trim on a dedicated path so it cannot wind with a daughter coil or touch a future joining area.

Sample every daughter coil

Measure width at the reel beginning, center and end and inspect for camber or telescoping. Examine high points at the edge under the buyer’s method and check the broad foil face for scratches from knife holders or guides. Preserve the location of each lane across the parent coil.

Check downstream tab conversion

Send labeled narrow coils for the buyer’s actual cut-to-length, shaped blank or welding trial. If the tab process uses a sealing film, its placement and bonding are separate operations. The slitting release should record edge and coil condition, not promise weld strength or cell performance.

Define the Required Cut Result

  • Make narrow aluminum lead-stock coils to the approved width map.
  • Limit burrs, loose metal fines and foil wrinkles.
  • Preserve parent-lane and surface traceability.
  • Provide sound feed stock for later tab cutting.

Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife

A foil edge develops a folded lip

  • Compare knife engagement and tension.
  • Inspect both sides of each daughter lane.

Narrow coil telescopes during rewind

  • Review lane tension, core fit and edge curl.
  • Measure after the reel relaxes.

Metallic dust appears at a guide

  • Inspect blade wear and trim takeoff.
  • Check collection before releasing the lead stock.

Information to Send for Technical Review

You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.

  • Aluminum alloy, temper and foil certificate
  • Confirmation of uncoated standalone lead stock
  • Parent width, gauge and coil ID
  • Daughter-lane map and trim allowances
  • Edge burr and particle acceptance
  • Knife, support and tension trial settings
  • Rewind and contamination-control plan
  • Later tab cut and weld test owner

Questions About This Cutting Application

Is this slitting a coated cathode electrode?

No. The page concerns separate aluminum lead foil before tab making.

Can the same knife setting be used on every battery foil?

No. Grade, thickness and target width must be trialed on the actual roll.

Why identify each daughter lane?

It permits comparison of edge quality and later joining results by parent-coil position.

Does a smooth edge prove weld quality?

No. The cell maker must test the specified joining process.

What should be submitted with an RFQ?

Send a labeled foil coil, lane map, burr limit and intended tab route.
