XLPE Cable Insulation Notching And Cutoff Blades
Use notching and cutoff only when the customer drawing defines a real notch, window, relief or combined end feature in an insulation-only profile or declared cable component. Do not invent a notch because the material is extruded, and do not treat this page as generic wire stripping.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Supplied material and process stage
Define the actual cutting object and manufacturing stage. Confirm whether it is an insulation-only extruded tube or profile, an insulated conductor, or a finished cable assembly with semiconductive screens, shield, armour or jacket. Record crosslinking state, wall geometry, conductor and layer stack, extrusion direction, temperature, support and the layers that may or may not be cut. NRC examples show XLPE as cable insulation within multi-layer cable constructions; they do not define the customer cable or a MEIRENTE tool.
Installed process checkpoint
Record feature drawing, profile or cable layer stack, notch datum and depth, cutoff length, registration, support, clamp, tool sequence, chip removal and protected zones.
Output and inspection stage
Measure notch geometry, position, depth and final length; inspect corners, whitening, cracks, incomplete chips, opposite-wall marks and conductor or screen clearance.
Notching And Cutoff process boundary
Confirm that the supplied construction, actual machine operation and approved drawing match this process before reviewing a replacement tool.
Notching And Cutoff setup checkpoint
Record material condition, protected zones, installed interface and downstream handling before a controlled trial.
Notching And Cutoff acceptance checkpoint
Use customer-approved dimensions and observable defect limits on labelled samples from the same feed and machine settings.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Measure notch geometry and position from the approved datum
- Measure cutoff length and end squareness separately
- Inspect cracks, whitening, incomplete chips and opposite-wall marks
- Verify conductor, screen and other protected-layer clearance using the customer method
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Notch position walks relative to the cutoff end
Compare feed index, feature registration, tool sequence, slip and the approved datum.
The notch cracks beyond its corner or whitens the wall
Review corner geometry, material state, support and entry rather than assuming one universal profile.
The opposite wall or conductor is contacted
Stop and verify tool depth, support, wall variation and the declared protected-layer limit.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial
Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.

- Measure cutoff length and end squareness separately
- Inspect cracks, whitening, incomplete chips and opposite-wall marks

Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Existing registered punch and cutoff set | For a machine already coordinating a supported feature and end cut. | Confirm tool seats, stroke, sequence, counter-surface, registration and chip ejection. |
| Existing profile die or rotary feature cutter | Only where the installed equipment controls path and depth against the actual profile. | Confirm drawing, phase, depth stop, support, runout and guarding. |

Questions About This Cutting Application
Can a blade form be selected from the term “XLPE cable insulation” alone?
No. Confirm the supplied construction, actual process stage, installed interface, current tool and accepted and rejected samples.
Does every XLPE insulation profile need a notch?
No. Only an approved feature drawing establishes this operation.
Can notching be assumed to strip a conductor end?
No. Stripping is a separate process with explicit insulation-removal and conductor-protection criteria.
