Suppository Strip-Pack Foil Cross Cutting Blades
Suppository strip-pack foil is a laminated packaging stock, not a bare aluminum sheet. Bilcare describes a soft foil/PE suppository laminate, and IMA Sarong describes two continuous bands formed, filled, cooled and sealed before the band is cut into strips containing the specified number of cavities. This guide addresses that registered transverse separation at an approved inter-cavity seal land. Confirm the actual cutter station, cavity repeat and foil/PE structure from the buyer’s line drawing. Inspect both foil and sealant at the delivered strip end; a clean cut alone cannot establish leak-tightness or shelf stability.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Locate the cut in the actual sequence
Locate the cutting station after the forming, filling, cooling and sealing steps on the actual IMA-type or other buyer line. Mark the approved cross-cut between cavities on the packaging drawing, including cavity peaks, print register and leading/trailing end-seal lands. Keep the knife outside the medicine cavity and required seal area.
Support the soft foil laminate
Support the sealed strip band at the inter-cavity cut without pressing on formed shoulders or filled cavities. Trial the specified transverse blade against the actual foil/PE laminate. Inspect for foil cracking next to the seal land, layer separation, a PE lip and any debris that could travel into the packaged product path.
Inspect the retained strip ends
Count the intended cavities in each separated strip and measure pitch and both end-seal lands. Inspect foil whitening, pinholes, delamination, loose metal and sealant smears under the buyer method. Segregate damaged packs, and leave medicine-contact decisions to the packaging owner’s quality process.
Check after the packaging step
Compare samples from the first and last registered cuts after normal cooling and strip collection. A correct machine index does not prove intact end seals after separation. The pack maker should perform its own seal integrity, peel and stability tests on representative finished strips.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Keep transverse pitch aligned to cavity and print datums.
- Preserve the specified end-seal land without foil cracks or PE strings.
- Separate every foil/PE layer and control trim debris.
- Provide traceable cut samples for the package maker’s functional tests.
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
End seal becomes too narrow
- Compare cut mark with printed and cavity registration.
- Inspect index drift over the run.
- Measure both leading and trailing seal lands.
Foil cracks near a formed shoulder
- Check cutter position relative to formed cavities and sealed inter-cavity land.
- Review blade support and web bend at the cut.
- Inspect incoming foil for pre-existing strain.
PE sealant strings at the cut
- Inspect blade buildup and edge temperature.
- Confirm full laminate separation.
- Compare early and late specimens for smearing.
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Supported transverse shear knife | For straight separation of a formed and sealed suppository band on a compatible indexed line. | Confirm station position, foil/PE stack, pitch and debris control on buyer material. |
| Registered rotary cross-cut pair | When the installed packaging line uses rotating cross-cut drums at a fixed repeat. | Confirm drum geometry, print/cavity registration and accepted end-seal allowance. |

- Cavity pitch, print mark and transverse cut drawing
- Leading and trailing end-seal dimensions
- Knife/counter-knife and support drawings
- Accepted foil-crack, pinhole and PE-lip examples
- Collection and debris-control method
- Pack maker seal, peel and stability acceptance plan
Questions About This Cutting Application
Is this the same as cutting blister lidding foil?
No. The cited suppository stock is a formable/sealable laminate, and the cut location depends on the unit-dose line sequence.
Where should a strip be separated?
Use the approved cavity repeat and seal drawing; a visually centered cut can still remove needed end-seal area.
Why inspect the PE side?
A clean metal edge can hide an unsevered or smeared sealant layer that affects later sealing or handling.
Can a clean edge prove package integrity?
No. The package maker must validate the filled and sealed strip using its own tests.
What should accompany an RFQ?
Send the real laminate, machine station and cavity drawing, print repeat, accepted cut samples and final package test criteria.
