Gypsum Faced Paper Roll Slitting Blades
Slitting divides a facing-paper master roll into narrower rolls before gypsum-board manufacture. Mark grain and intended face, then compare daughter-roll widths at the cut and after rewind. This paper is not the gypsum core or a roofing membrane; a clean edge can still hide width drift or winding scuff.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Actual supplied workpiece
Confirm the actual facing-paper grade, basis weight, grain direction, surface treatment and supplied roll condition. USG describes paper used on gypsum panels; this conversion guide concerns the paper before it is bonded to a gypsum core, not cutting finished board.
Installed cutting setup
Record master width, grain direction, web guide, cutter spacing, supported contact and rewind paths.
Cut output and inspection stage
Compare both daughter-roll edges, width and face at the cutter and on the rewound roll.
Roll Slitting process boundary
Do not infer a bituminous layer, reinforcement scrim, adhesive or release liner from the term gypsum facing paper. A coated grade must be identified from its supplier sheet.
Roll Slitting setup checkpoint
Compare marked accepted and rejected samples from the same supplied grade, machine and inspection stage.
Roll Slitting acceptance checkpoint
Approve knife geometry only from the original blade, holder drawing and controlled sample trial.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Measure each daughter-roll width at named roll positions
- Inspect both paper edges for fiber pull over an agreed length
- Compare retained face before and after rewind
- Record roll build and edge condition against approved samples
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Width wanders but both slit edges are clean
Check incoming web position, guide datum and relaxed width before attributing drift to edge wear.
Paper fibers pull from one side only
Compare grain direction, local support and knife contact on both slit edges.
At-cut edges pass but rewound rolls scuff
Separate blade contact from winding pressure and roll-to-roll face contact.
A later material lot cuts differently
Compare actual grade, surface or facing, incoming condition and recovery before assigning the difference to edge fiber pull, dust or surface scuff.
gypsum-board facing paper Roll Slitting Diagnostic
Check material identity, feed and support, blade contact and post-cut handling in that order; do not infer a standard replacement from the workpiece name.

At-cut edges pass but rewound rolls scuff

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial
Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.
- Measure each daughter-roll width at named roll positions
- Inspect both paper edges for fiber pull over an agreed length
- Compare retained face before and after rewind
- Record roll build and edge condition against approved samples
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Matched shear-slitting pair | Only for an installed supported shear station. | Confirm pair dimensions, holder and both-edge paper samples. |
| Guided fixed slitter | Only where the existing web support and guarding suit a stationary blade. | Confirm holder, exposed edge and contact with the specified face. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Exact facing-paper grade and supplier sheet
- Grain and intended-face marks
- Master width, core and target daughter-roll widths
- Guide, cutter and rewind station drawings
- Installed blade pair or holder dimensions
- Marked good and rejected edges from both sides
- Width, fiber-pull and surface-scuff limits
- Trial roll length, downstream laminating stage and quantity

Questions About This Cutting Application
Can a knife be chosen from the term gypsum-board facing paper alone?
No. Confirm the supplied grade, installed equipment, original tool and approved samples.
Is this a guide to cutting finished plasterboard?
No. The workpiece is supplied facing paper before core bonding.
Does a clean slit prove roll acceptance?
No. Check width and rewound face separately.
