Composite Peel Ply Cut To Size Blades

For peel-ply blanks, a square-looking cross-cut can still leave pulled yarns or a distorted fabric direction. Number consecutive pieces and mark the feed datum and weave direction. Compare commanded advance, actual length and diagonal after the blank is lifted from the fixture.

Where This Cutting Application Appears

Supplied process material

Identify the supplied peel-ply grade, fabric construction, width, weave direction and incoming edge condition. Peel ply is a removable process fabric, not the cured laminate or a honeycomb core.

Installed cutting setup

Record whether the supplied fabric arrives as a roll or sheet, how it is indexed and held, and the actual cross-cut motion.

Converted output

Inspect released blank length, squareness, cut-end yarns and orientation before kitting.

Cut To Size process boundary

This guide concerns cut to size of composite peel ply, not cutting a cured laminate or honeycomb core. It does not establish a universal blade geometry or machine setting.

Cut To Size setup checkpoint

Keep the supplied fabric grade and approved layup use fixed during a trial. Check loose yarns and fabric distortion before blaming the cutter.

Cut To Size acceptance checkpoint

Compare marked accepted and rejected material with the same measurement and handling sequence.

Define the Required Cut Result

  • Meet the agreed relaxed blank dimensions
  • Keep weave direction aligned to the layup instruction
  • Limit loose yarns at the cross-cut
  • Prevent distortion during pickup and stacking

Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife

Length varies while the cut end looks similar

Compare physical feed travel with clamp slip and relaxed measurement.

Only one cut corner develops long yarns

Check local support, entry direction and fabric skew at that corner.

The blank changes shape after lifting

Measure on the fixture and after release before attributing the change to blade geometry.

Incoming material differs from the trial sample

Separate a change in supplied grade, hole pattern or fabric construction from a cutting-system change.

Peel-Ply Fabric Cut To Size Diagnostic

Review the supplied material, support, cutter contact and post-cut handling before specifying a replacement for cut to size.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial

Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.

  • Measure numbered relaxed lengths against the agreed datum
  • Check diagonals or squareness of the same blanks
  • Count pulled yarns at both cut ends
  • Compare orientation and condition after the specified stacking step

Knife Forms That May Be Considered

Possible knife formWhen it may be consideredWhat must be confirmed
Supported straight cross-cut bladeWhere the installed cutter restrains fabric on both sides of the transverse cut.Confirm stroke, counter-surface and holder drawing.
Synchronized rotary cutoffOnly when the existing roll-fed machine uses synchronized rotary motion.Confirm timing, support and cut-end trial on the supplied fabric.

Information to Send for Technical Review

You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.

  • Peel-ply grade, fabric construction and roll or sheet state
  • Weave direction and required layup orientation
  • Blank dimensions, relaxed tolerance and squareness method
  • Feed datum, clamp and support drawing
  • Installed blade, counter-surface and holder drawing
  • Numbered good and rejected blanks
  • Cut-end yarn and handling-damage limits
  • Trial sequence, kit format and required quantity

Related Composite Cutting and Service Pages

  • Review circular formats only if the installed fabric slitter uses them
  • Review a replacement against the existing blade and holder drawing
  • Review manufacture and inspection capabilities

Questions About This Cutting Application

Is composite peel ply a cured laminate or honeycomb core?

No. Confirm the exact supplied process consumable and its approved composite layup role before choosing a cutting method.

Does a clean end prove the feed length is correct?

No. Verify physical advance and released dimensions separately.

Why label fabric direction?

The converted blank must retain the orientation required by the approved layup instruction.

Can one blank represent a run?

Use consecutive numbered blanks to reveal feed drift or progressive snagging.
