Composite Peel Ply Profile Cutting Blades
A peel-ply profile is a shaped fabric blank, not a cured composite contour. Mark straight runs, inside corners and the smallest approved radius on the CAD pattern. Retain the removed fabric and compare the first yarn pull-out point with the fabric direction and local fixture support.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Supplied process material
Identify the supplied peel-ply grade, fabric construction, width, weave direction and incoming edge condition. Peel ply is a removable process fabric, not the cured laminate or a honeycomb core.
Installed cutting setup
Record CAD datum, weave direction, hold-down, support at narrow features and the installed contour-cutting motion.
Converted output
Check released profile fit, yarn condition at named zones and whether scrap removal disturbs the kept blank.
Profile Cutting process boundary
This guide concerns profile cutting of composite peel ply, not cutting a cured laminate or honeycomb core. It does not establish a universal blade geometry or machine setting.
Profile Cutting setup checkpoint
Keep the supplied fabric grade and approved layup use fixed during a trial. Check loose yarns and fabric distortion before blaming the cutter.
Profile Cutting acceptance checkpoint
Compare marked accepted and rejected material with the same measurement and handling sequence.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Match the approved fabric outline
- Keep narrow tabs and corners intact
- Limit yarn pull-out at directional changes
- Remove scrap without lifting the accepted blank
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Only inside corners fray
Compare local radius, yarn direction, support and cutter entry at those points.
Profile shifts after unclamping
Measure against the fixture datum before and after release.
Waste removal pulls threads from the kept part
Inspect bridges and scrap-removal direction before changing the cutter.
Incoming material differs from the trial sample
Separate a change in supplied grade, hole pattern or fabric construction from a cutting-system change.
Peel-Ply Fabric Profile Cutting Diagnostic
Review the supplied material, support, cutter contact and post-cut handling before specifying a replacement for profile cutting.
Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial
Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.
- Measure deviation at marked straight, radius and corner points
- Count loose yarns at the tightest approved features
- Record kept-part damage during scrap removal
- Check blank fit and direction against the approved layup template
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Matched profile die | For a repeated shape on an installed supported press or die line. | Confirm die path, hold-down and material-trial edge. |
| Guided contour knife | For an installed fixture following a CAD outline without a matched die. | Confirm travel, holder interface and corner support. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Exact peel-ply fabric grade and construction
- CAD outline, datum and fabric direction
- Minimum radius, narrow features and dimensional tolerance
- Fixture support and hold-down map
- Installed knife or die and holder drawings
- Direction-marked accepted and rejected blanks
- Yarn-pull and scrap-removal inspection limits
- Kitting method, trial quantity and required quantity

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is composite peel ply a cured laminate or honeycomb core?
No. Confirm the exact supplied process consumable and its approved composite layup role before choosing a cutting method.
Is a laminate-profile blade automatically suitable?
No. This is a fabric consumable; test the actual fixture and woven edge.
Why inspect the removed fabric?
It can show where a yarn bridge or snag began during cutting or waste removal.
Is one straight edge enough for approval?
No. Compare straight runs, corners and narrow features separately.
