Carbon Non-Crimp Fabric Profile Cutting Blades

A carbon NCF profile is a shaped reinforcement blank, not a cured laminate contour. Mark fiber axes, stitch lines, narrow tabs and the smallest approved radius on the CAD pattern. Retain the offcut so the first stitch bridge or tow pull-out can be located during cutting or scrap removal.

Where This Cutting Application Appears

Supplied material and orientation

Confirm the supplied carbon NCF architecture, fiber axes, stitch construction, ply count, width and incoming edge. It is a stitched reinforcement fabric, not an already cured laminate or honeycomb core.

Installed cutting setup

Record contour datum, fiber axes, ply restraint, support at corners and the installed profile-cutting motion.

Output and downstream handling

Inspect released outline, ply registration and retained stitch condition at straight runs, radii and corners.

Profile Cutting process boundary

This guide covers profile cutting of carbon non-crimp fabric; it does not establish a universal blade format, machine setting or material performance claim.

Profile Cutting setup checkpoint

Mark fiber axes and stitch lines on each trial sample. Separate incoming stitch or tow damage from damage first observed at the cutter and after fabric handling.

Profile Cutting acceptance checkpoint

Compare direction-marked good and rejected material under the same measurement and handling sequence.

Define the Required Cut Result

  • Meet the approved fabric profile
  • Preserve intended fiber axes and ply registration
  • Limit tow pull-out at tight features
  • Remove scrap without distorting kept tabs

Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife

Loose tows cluster at one radius

Compare fiber-axis direction, local support and cutter entry at that radius.

A stitch bridge pulls the kept profile

Inspect the scrap and separation sequence before changing penetration.

Layers shift after unclamping

Measure contour and ply position both on the fixture and after release.

Incoming material differs from the trial lot

Check the supplied grade, construction and incoming defects before attributing a changed result to the cutter.

Carbon NCF Profile Cutting Diagnostic

Separate incoming construction, fixture support, blade contact and post-cut handling before selecting a replacement for profile cutting.

Loose tows cluster at one radius

Compare fiber-axis direction, local support and cutter entry at that radius.

A stitch bridge pulls the kept profile

Inspect the scrap and separation sequence before changing penetration.

Layers shift after unclamping

Measure contour and ply position both on the fixture and after release.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial

Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.

  • Measure deviation at marked straight, radius and corner points
  • Count loose tows and cut-stitch bridges at critical features
  • Record kept-part distortion during scrap removal
  • Check ply registration and fiber axes against the layup template

Knife Forms That May Be Considered

Possible knife formWhen it may be consideredWhat must be confirmed
Matched profile dieFor repeated fabric shapes on an installed supported die line.Confirm die path, hold-down and stitch-edge trial.
Guided contour knifeWhere an existing fixture follows the approved CAD path.Confirm travel, holder and support at narrow features.

Information to Send for Technical Review

You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.

  • Exact NCF architecture, axes, ply count and stitch construction
  • CAD contour, datum and fiber-axis orientation
  • Minimum radii, narrow features and dimensional tolerances
  • Support and hold-down map through the contour
  • Current die or knife and holder drawings
  • Direction-marked accepted and rejected profiles
  • Tow, stitch and ply-shift inspection limits
  • Scrap-removal method, trial quantity and required quantity

Questions About This Cutting Application

Can a blade be selected from the term carbon non-crimp fabric alone?

No. Check the supplied grade, actual machine interface, drawing and approved samples before specifying a component.

Is rotary kiss-cutting a default NCF method?

No. A dry stitched fabric need not have a functional liner; use only the approved installed process.

Why retain the offcut?

It can show the first stitch bridge or snag that damaged the kept blank.

Can a clean straight edge approve the whole profile?

No. Inspect small radii and narrow tabs separately.

Public references and scope

These public sources provide material, cutting-method or safety context for this guide. Supplier pages describe their own materials or equipment; they do not establish a MEIRENTE blade specification or performance claim. Confirm the actual grade, machine setup and required cut with a drawing or sample.
