Carbon Non-Crimp Fabric Edge Trimming Blades

Trimming carbon NCF preserves one usable fabric edge and removes a narrow band. Mark fiber axes, stitch-line position, retained-edge datum and trim allowance. Offcut breaks and damage to the kept ply stack must be inspected as separate outcomes.

Carbon Non-Crimp Fabric before and after edge trimming with accepted and defect edge references
Carbon non-crimp fabric samples compare accepted edge trimming results with the principal defect conditions reviewed in this guide.

Where This Cutting Application Appears

Supplied material and orientation

Confirm the supplied carbon NCF architecture, fiber axes, stitch construction, ply count, width and incoming edge. It is a stitched reinforcement fabric, not an already cured laminate or honeycomb core.

Installed cutting setup

Record incoming selvedge, support behind the kept edge, blade motion and narrow-offcut collection path.

Output and downstream handling

Measure relaxed finished width and compare the retained edge, offcut and ply alignment after handling.

Edge Trimming process boundary

This guide covers edge trimming of carbon non-crimp fabric; it does not establish a universal blade format, machine setting or material performance claim.

Edge Trimming setup checkpoint

Mark fiber axes and stitch lines on each trial sample. Separate incoming stitch or tow damage from damage first observed at the cutter and after fabric handling.

Edge Trimming acceptance checkpoint

Compare direction-marked good and rejected material under the same measurement and handling sequence.

Define the Required Cut Result

  • Hold finished retained width
  • Limit loose tows and cut-stitch unraveling on the kept edge
  • Prevent offcut drag across the kept fabric
  • Keep all plies aligned

Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife

The offcut snags at stitch crossings

Compare trim allowance, stitch repeat and take-up path.

Only the kept edge loses a ply

Map support distance and blade contact through the ply stack.

Finished width varies down the roll

Compare incoming selvedge, guide datum and relaxed dimensions.

Incoming material differs from the trial lot

Check the supplied grade, construction and incoming defects before attributing a changed result to the cutter.

Carbon NCF Edge Trimming Diagnostic

Separate incoming construction, fixture support, blade contact and post-cut handling before selecting a replacement for edge trimming.

The offcut snags at stitch crossings

Compare trim allowance, stitch repeat and take-up path.

Only the kept edge loses a ply

Map support distance and blade contact through the ply stack.

Finished width varies down the roll

Compare incoming selvedge, guide datum and relaxed dimensions.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial

Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.

  • Measure retained width after relaxation at marked positions
  • Count loose tow and stitch ends over a defined kept-edge length
  • Record offcut breaks separately from product defects
  • Check ply registration and fiber-axis orientation after take-off

Knife Forms That May Be Considered

Possible knife formWhen it may be consideredWhat must be confirmed
Supported straight trim bladeWhere the installed fixture supports the kept ply stack next to a straight trim line.Confirm guide, holder and scrap path.
Circular shear edge-trim pairOnly where the existing line uses supported rotary trim.Confirm overlap, side load and retained-edge sample.

Information to Send for Technical Review

You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.

  • NCF grade, axes, ply count and stitch construction
  • Incoming selvedge, original width and trim allowance
  • Retained-edge datum and relaxed-width tolerance
  • Support, guide, trim and offcut drawings
  • Installed blade pair or fixed knife and holder drawings
  • Marked kept-edge and offcut samples
  • Stitch, tow and ply-shift inspection limits
  • Downstream layup use, trial length and required quantity

Questions About This Cutting Application

Can a blade be selected from the term carbon non-crimp fabric alone?

No. Check the supplied grade, actual machine interface, drawing and approved samples before specifying a component.

Does a broken offcut fail the kept fabric?

Not automatically. Inspect retained-edge and offcut outcomes separately.

Why record stitch-line position?

The trim may cut through or beside a stitch line, affecting kept-edge integrity.

How does trimming differ from slitting?

Trimming protects one kept edge; slitting produces strips with two usable edges.

Public references and scope

These public sources provide material, cutting-method or safety context for this guide. Supplier pages describe their own materials or equipment; they do not establish a MEIRENTE blade specification or performance claim. Confirm the actual grade, machine setup and required cut with a drawing or sample.
