Composite Peel Ply Sheet Slitting Blades
Peel ply is a removable process fabric, not a resin-rich laminate or honeycomb sheet. In longitudinal slitting, mark the weave direction, strip position and accepted edge. Compare yarn pull-out at the cut with the incoming fabric and with any damage added during strip separation or rewind.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Supplied process material
Identify the supplied peel-ply grade, fabric construction, width, weave direction and incoming edge condition. Peel ply is a removable process fabric, not the cured laminate or a honeycomb core.
Installed cutting setup
Record fabric direction, web guide, tension, slitting motion, strip take-off and any edge treatment specified by the fabric supplier.
Converted output
Measure the strip after relaxed handling and inspect both slit edges and the wound roll separately.
Sheet Slitting process boundary
This guide concerns sheet slitting of composite peel ply, not cutting a cured laminate or honeycomb core. It does not establish a universal blade geometry or machine setting.
Sheet Slitting setup checkpoint
Keep the supplied fabric grade and approved layup use fixed during a trial. Check loose yarns and fabric distortion before blaming the cutter.
Sheet Slitting acceptance checkpoint
Compare marked accepted and rejected material with the same measurement and handling sequence.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Hold the agreed strip width after relaxation
- Limit loose yarns at both usable edges
- Keep fabric direction and lot traceable
- Avoid adding distortion during strip separation and winding
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
One slit edge sheds yarns
Compare weave direction, knife contact and support on the same strip position; inspect the incoming selvedge separately.
Width is correct at the cutter but drifts after winding
Compare at-cut and relaxed widths with tension and winding alignment before changing the knife.
Adjacent strips snag during separation
Check yarn bridges at the cut line and take-off path before changing overlap.
Incoming material differs from the trial sample
Separate a change in supplied grade, hole pattern or fabric construction from a cutting-system change.
Peel-Ply Fabric Sheet Slitting Diagnostic
Review the supplied material, support, cutter contact and post-cut handling before specifying a replacement for sheet slitting.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial
Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.
- Measure each named strip at start, middle and end after relaxation
- Count loose yarns over an agreed edge length
- Record yarn bridges during strip separation
- Compare wound-roll edge and fabric orientation with the accepted sample
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Circular shear pair | Only where the installed line already provides supported rotary shear. | Confirm upper/lower geometry, side load, holder and fabric-edge trial. |
| Guided straight slitter | Where the installed fixture advances fabric past a fixed supported cut. | Confirm guide, support, motion and original holder drawing. |
Information to Send for Technical Review
You do not need to know the exact blade name. Send the available workpiece, machine, current-knife and cut-result information so the application can be reviewed against a drawing or sample.
- Exact peel-ply grade, construction and supplier specification
- Roll width, fabric direction, incoming selvedge and lot
- Target strip widths and relaxed measurement method
- Web path, support, guide, tension and take-off layout
- Current blade pair or fixed blade and holder drawing
- Marked accepted and rejected slit-edge samples
- Loose-yarn and yarn-bridge inspection limits
- Trial length, downstream layup use and required quantity

Questions About This Cutting Application
Is composite peel ply a cured laminate or honeycomb core?
No. Confirm the exact supplied process consumable and its approved composite layup role before choosing a cutting method.
Is every frayed edge a dull-blade symptom?
No. Compare incoming fabric, weave direction, support and strip separation first.
Should a hot knife be assumed?
No. Edge-treatment method must follow the supplied fabric and approved conversion process, not a generic peel-ply label.
When should width be checked?
Measure both at cut and after the agreed relaxation or winding step.
