Aerospace Structural Adhesive Film Sheet Slitting Blades
Structural adhesive film may be supplied with a supporting carrier and one or more release liners; the exact construction must be confirmed from the supplied grade. For sheet slitting, keep liner orientation and approved handling state fixed, then compare width, edge pickup and liner damage along the same run. A tack-related blockage should not be confused with a dull edge.

Where This Cutting Application Appears
Incoming material and orientation
Record the exact film and carrier construction, release liners, tack condition, approved handling state and any pre-existing edge lift; do not infer these from a generic film name.
Installed cutting setup
Record the unwind path, liner orientation, web tension, slitting motion and rewind separation under the supplier-approved handling condition.
Output and downstream handling
Measure slit width and inspect adhesive and liner edges before and after rewind at identified positions.
Sheet Slitting process boundary
This guide covers sheet slitting of aerospace structural adhesive film; it does not establish a universal blade geometry, machine setting or material performance claim.
Sheet Slitting setup checkpoint
Hold the supplied material and approved handling condition constant while mapping support, motion and contact on the actual equipment.
Sheet Slitting acceptance checkpoint
Compare marked accepted and rejected samples with the same dimensional and edge pickup, liner damage and transferred adhesive inspection method.
Define the Required Cut Result
- Hold slit width without liner or carrier damage
- Limit adhesive transfer to blade and support
- Avoid edge blocking during rewind or stacking
- Preserve the agreed film handling and traceability state
Problems to Diagnose Before Changing the Knife
Adhesive collects at one blade position
Compare liner contact, temperature history and local support before attributing it to wear.
The liner tears while adhesive separates
Check penetration depth, liner orientation and the required cut-through level.
Width changes after rewind
Compare web tension and roll build with the at-cut width.
aerospace structural adhesive film condition changes before the cut
Retain incoming samples and separate pre-existing edge pickup, liner damage and transferred adhesive from damage first observed at the cutter.
Adhesive Film Sheet Slitting Diagnostic
Compare material condition, fixture or web support, knife contact and downstream handling before selecting a replacement for sheet slitting.

Acceptance Criteria for a Controlled Trial
Agree how the trial will be judged before changing the knife or machine setting.
- Measure width at the start, middle and end of a controlled run
- Record adhesive buildup by position and elapsed material length
- Inspect liner or carrier integrity on both edges
- Check rewind or stack separation after the agreed handling interval
Knife Forms That May Be Considered
| Possible knife form | When it may be considered | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Circular shear pair | When the existing slitter supports the film and requires a full-through cut. | Confirm actual upper/lower geometry, liner handling and adhesive transfer in a trial. |
| Guarded razor or score arrangement | Only if the installed anvil and liner construction support the required cut depth. | Confirm whether liner retention is required and inspect it for damage. |
Information to Send for Technical Review

Questions About This Cutting Application
Can the cutter be chosen from film thickness alone?
No. Carrier, liner, tack, handling state and the installed support or anvil determine what a controlled trial must verify.
Can the blade be specified without identifying the release liner?
No. Liner count and orientation affect support, cut depth and inspection.
Is a tacky edge always caused by a worn blade?
No. Compare incoming tack, handling state, blade contact and rewind before assigning the cause.
Should the liner always be cut through?
Only if the approved conversion specification requires it.
Why inspect after rewind?
Blocking or width changes can appear after winding even when the immediate slit looks acceptable.
